Yet again, we have another failing EGR system, this time on a 2009 Land Rover Freelander 2, 2.2 160bhp engine.
Although this engine in question done 83,000 miles, it was quite clogged up, and pulling out at junctions did take a delay or two.
Despite what everyone says, when an EGR system is severlly blocked, you can not just write a new map, with the egr system disabled, as it will remain stuck open and not shut. Hence you need to manually block these as well.
What is an EGR?
EGR” stands for exhaust gas recirculation. When engine combustion temperatures near 2500°F, the formation of smog-producing nitrogen oxides (NOx) increases. Exhaust, however, is mostly composed of carbon dioxide (CO2), which does not burn. The function of the EGR valve is to recirculate small amounts of exhaust back into the combustion chambers of the engine in order to decrease the combustion temperature, thereby reducing the formation of smog-producing nitrogen oxides.
Its this build up of carbon that promotes failure of these items. Add to that the cost to customers to is not cheap either.
Once the EGR is blanked off mechaincally we can then set about tuning it properly, with egr function deleted, written into the new map.
standard power output is 157bhp and 295lb ft.
Stage 1 power will be
200bhp and 369lb ft.
MPG is a massive improvement of 15% so far on like for like driving.
Again proving that the cost of the remap will be paid for within the year, subject annual mileage.

Had the pleasure of helping out a local garage with a Ford Ranger 3.2 5 cyinder, customer will be doing a lot of towing so wanted some extra bhp and lb ft to help.
Standard tune these engines produce 197bhp and 347 lb ft.
After a stage 1 tune these produce
243bhp and 400 lbft.
This is still a safe limit on the drivetrain, and imrpoves mid range power quite a bit now!

Had a great example of a Mark 1 Range Rover Sport 4.2 supercharged in for a remap recently.
Although we could have fitted it, the engine already had a 10%supercharger pulley upgrade on it.

What is remapping?
Engine remapping has become increasingly popular in recent years, as drivers become more familiar with the little black boxes that control their cars vital functions, and more aware of the opportunities to ‘tweak’ the settings.
The process used to be called chipping, as it literally meant swapping a microchip in your car’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU) with a modified version. Nowadays the black art has advanced to the point where home-brewed engine remapping software is available to download from various internet groups for brave and/or tech-savvy home-tuners who like to experiment. We’d never recommend that route, as unsurprisingly there’s a significant risk of causing expensive engine damage if a remap is not done properly.
So for most people an engine remap involves a trip to a local specialist Like Tuning Emporium, where we can overwrite your factory engine settings via a laptop, directly into your car’s OBD port, or we can tune your ecu on the bench.
There are two primary reasons for wanting a remap, and they’re called power and torque. When your car left the factory there’s a very good chance its performance was deliberately muted in order to meet product planning objectives or economy and efficiency targets.
These days the power and performance of most cars is limited, not by any particular mechanical factor, but by the software running in the engine control unit (ECU).
Computer algorithms running behind the scenes while you’re driving a modern car affect all sorts of parameters, such as ignition timing, air/fuel ratio and turbocharging boost pressure.
So if you want greater performance and pulling power from your car, or alternatively if you’re seeking mpg improvements, the first place to look is the little black box under the bonnet. A recent customer had his Land Rover Freelander in for a remap and software update with us at Tuning Emorium.
We did this remotely at customers house. Before we commenced the remap process we had to do a software update on the vehicle. This we can do for all models of the Jaguar Land Rover range, contact us for more details.

Again this is not a job we can rush, we always take our time to ensure our work is correct.
In standard tune the engine should produce 156bhp and 295 lb ft.
Once tuned with our bespoke remap and egr delete function it should produce 199bhp and 369lb ft.
And as its a manual gearbox, it certianly delivered the extra power a lot smoother.
One main benefit of remapping will be a reduction in fuel consumption meaning that fuel will last you longer so saving YOU money. With the gained extra torque especially at the lower rev range you will see a fuel saving, as it will require less throttle input.
ECU remapping not only improves the engines power and torque, it will also heighten throttle response and expand the power-band. This means things like power delivery will be a lot more linear, which in turn will make the vehicle feel a lot more responsive too. The vehicles power output is frequently restricted by the manufacturer for no reason. Being a driving enthusiast, there is no need for such restrictions to be placed upon your ECU and reducing its performance therefore getting your ECU remapped you could benefit from the hidden power and torque that is hiding within your engine management system.
