EGR Deletes with COVID 19

We are still able to operate in this current climate, but with social distancing measures in place, and mainly for Key workers.

We are mainly working on cars where we can tune or update vehicles through the OBD port.

Unless customers send us their ECU in the post.

Tuning Emporium are specialists in EGR deleting and have been for sometime. And this is still a busy time for us, as many key workers have experienced their cars going into limp mode. Here at Tuning Emporium, we can advise which is the best solution.

Option 1:

Replace the EGR system with new OE ones. Only problem here is the cost.

Option 2:

Blank the EGR’s and have car reprogrammed accordingly

Option 3:

Blank EGR’s via the ECU, this does require the car to have no lights on the dash though, and the EGR’s to be able move still, and not in a stuck position.

Land Rover Freelander 2, 2.2 hdi, egr delete

Yet again, we have another failing EGR system, this time on a 2009 Land Rover Freelander 2, 2.2 160bhp engine.

Although this engine in question done 83,000 miles, it was quite clogged up, and pulling out at junctions did take a delay or two.

Freelander egr delete

Despite what everyone says, when an EGR system is severlly blocked, you can not just write a new map, with the egr system disabled, as it will remain stuck open and not shut. Hence you need to manually block these as well.

What is an EGR?

EGR” stands for exhaust gas recirculation. When engine combustion temperatures near 2500°F, the formation of smog-producing nitrogen oxides (NOx) increases. Exhaust, however, is mostly composed of carbon dioxide (CO2), which does not burn. The function of the EGR valve is to recirculate small amounts of exhaust back into the combustion chambers of the engine in order to decrease the combustion temperature, thereby reducing the formation of smog-producing nitrogen oxides.

Its this build up of carbon that promotes failure of these items. Add to that the cost to customers to is not cheap either.

Once the EGR is blanked off mechaincally we can then set about tuning it properly, with egr function deleted, written into the new map.

standard power output is 157bhp and 295lb ft.

Stage 1 power will be

200bhp and 369lb ft.

MPG is a massive improvement of 15% so far on like for like driving.

Again proving that the cost of the remap will be paid for within the year, subject annual mileage.

Land Rover Freelander ECU remap at Tuning Emporium

A recent customer had his Land Rover Freelander in for a remap and software update with us at Tuning Emorium.

We did this remotely at customers house.  Before we commenced the remap process we had to do a software update on the vehicle.  This we can do for all models of the Jaguar Land Rover range, contact us for more details.

Land Rover Freelander ECU remap with software update
Land Rover Freelander ECU remap with software update

Again this is not a job we can rush, we always take our time to ensure our work is correct.

In standard tune the engine should produce 156bhp and 295 lb ft.

Once tuned with our bespoke remap and egr delete function it should produce 199bhp and 369lb ft.

And as its a manual gearbox, it certianly delivered the extra power a lot smoother.

One main benefit of remapping will be a reduction in fuel consumption meaning that fuel will last you longer so saving YOU money. With the gained extra torque especially at the lower rev range you will see a fuel saving, as it will require less throttle input.

ECU remapping not only improves the engines power and torque, it will also heighten throttle response and expand the power-band. This means things like power delivery will be a lot more linear, which in turn will make the vehicle feel a lot more responsive too. The vehicles power output is frequently restricted by the manufacturer for no reason. Being a driving enthusiast, there is no need for such restrictions to be placed upon your ECU and reducing its performance therefore getting your ECU remapped you could benefit from the hidden power and torque that is hiding within your engine management system.

Benfits for a turbocharged diesel engine:

  • Increased torque
  • Increased horsepower
  • Better throttle response
  • Smoother power delivery
  • Improved fuel economy
  • Safer overtaking

What is a remap? how does it work? Tuning Emporium explains

What is remapping?

Engine remapping has become increasingly popular over the past decade or so, as drivers become more familiar with the little boxes, that control their cars vital functions, and more aware of the opportunities to ‘tweak’ the settings.

TDV8 fitted with Skytag Tracker, and now with a stage 1 remap with 10% better fuel economy confimed by customer.

The process used to be called chipping, as it literally meant swapping a microchip in your car’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU) with a modified version. Nowadays the black art has advanced to the point where home-brewed engine remapping software is available to download from various internet groups for brave and/or tech-savvy home-tuners who like to experiment. We’d never recommend that route, as unsurprisingly there’s a significant risk of causing expensive engine damage if a remap is not done properly.

So for most people an engine remap involves a trip to a local specialist Like Tuning Emporium, where we  can overwrite your factory engine settings via a laptop, directly into your car’s OBD port, or we can tune your ecu on the bench.

There are two primary reasons for wanting a remap, and they’re called power and torque. When your car left the factory there’s a very good chance its performance was deliberately muted in order to meet product planning objectives or economy and efficiency targets.

These days the power and performance of most cars is limited, not by any particular mechanical factor, but by the software running in the engine control unit (ECU).

Computer algorithms running behind the scenes while you’re driving a modern car affect all sorts of parameters, such as ignition timing, air/fuel ratio and turbocharging boost pressure.

So if you want greater performance and pulling power from your car, or alternatively if you’re seeking mpg improvements, the first place to look is the little black box under the bonnet. Here at Tuning Emporium, we receive plenty of emails asking advice about ECU software changes, and we’ve compiled this guide to explore the pros, cons and costs.

Chipping turbodiesel engines can increase economy by seven to 10 per cent, because it adds torque lower down the rev range. This means the engine doesn’t have to work as hard as before. It’s these turbo diesel engines often known as TDI, HDi, CDTi, CDI,depending on the manufacturer that are cornerstone of the car chipping industry because an engine chip or software upgrade can cheaply add so much to the performance.

Our Prices start at £199 for OBD tuning, and ECU bench tuning costs start at £275.

Are ther any downsides to getting your ECU “chipped”?

Some people are concerned that engine remapping could cause problems with their car. But it shouldn’t affect reliability if you use a reputable company such as Tuning Emporium.

Remapping does put extra strain on an engine, but not a dangerous amount. We check carefully that the temperatures and pressures our remaps put the engine through don’t exceed the acceptable parameters.

For example, we run a 2008 Seat Leon 2.0 TDi 136bhp engine.

To date we have done 10,000 miles trouble free, with it running at 200bhp and 280lb ft, mpg is up by 10% too.

Most cars’ engines are built to offer more performance than they actually deliver, manufacturers launch a car with a set power figure, but then over the life of the model they’ll introduce a few facelifts and performance versions.

“They don’t develop new engines for each new version: mostly they limit the performance of the earlier models and then offer a little more power with each new edition. We just release the optimum performance.”

Obviously, you need to inform your insurer of a remap.

How much does car remapping or chipping cost?

Our Prices start at £199 for OBD tuning, and ECU bench tuning costs start at £275, the sky is the limit in terms of what you can spend on more advanced parts and services,The type of car you have will be a determining factor in the price you pay

You can also pay to have your car tested on a rolling road here at Tuning Emporium, so you can see the effect any ECU remapping work has had on the engine’s power and torque output.  But we do offer a mobile service subject to location and or Post code.

Ford Ranger Remapping at Tuning Emporium

We did some work for a local dealer recently, on a Wildtrack Ford Ranger 3.2.

Although a nice displacement in engine size, could still do with a little bit more BHP and LB Ft, to help towing.

We didn’t have to look to far for any ECU faults, non present.

In standard tune these produce 197bhp and 347lb ft.

For a stage 1 tune, it should produce

235bhp and 400lb ft.

plus 38bhp and 53lb ft over standard tune

A nice significant increase for extra towing ability.

However watch this space as we nice tuning package coming along for this set up, including a free flowing exhaust, intercooler and air filter upgrade.

Defender Puma 2.2 TDCi, remapping at Tuning Emporium….again :)

We love tuning Land Rover Defenders here at Tuning Emporium, we have yet to see the same spec twice, such is the versatility of them.

But there’s one thing they lack, is performance, even in standard tune, they are vey sluggish, even worse, when you want to tow something.

Happily we can help.  Such was the terrible power of the car, the customer was going to look at selling it, happily they didn’t and we set to work.

Stock power is a de tuned, Ford 2.2 TDCi engine, with 122bhp and 266lb ft.  once tuned, should be 165bhp and 310lb ft.

Making quite a nice power upgrade, and it certainly worked even in speeds up to 30mph, the difference was amazing.  We also took the opportunity to change air filters, to a K&N one.
