One of our recent jobs we had in was a 1.6CDTi Vauxhall Insignia, with has to be said, the worst swirl flaps we’ve ever seen.
Swirl flaps are small butterfly valves located within the intake manifold of some diesel and gasoline engines. Their primary function is to control the airflow entering the combustion chamber, improving the air-fuel mixture and enhancing engine efficiency, particularly at lower RPMs.
💡 How Swirl Flaps Work
- At low RPMs, the flaps partially close, creating a swirling motion of the air. This increases air turbulence, promoting better mixing with fuel, which leads to more efficient combustion, improved torque, and lower emissions.
- At higher RPMs, the flaps fully open, allowing maximum airflow for increased power output.
🔥 Benefits of Swirl Flaps
- Improved fuel efficiency, especially at low engine loads.
- Reduced emissions due to better combustion.
- Enhanced low-end torque and drivability.
⚠️ Potential Issues with Swirl Flaps
Swirl flaps can become a liability over time:
- Carbon Buildup: Over time, carbon deposits accumulate around the flaps, reducing their effectiveness and potentially causing them to stick.
- Flap Failure: In some cases, the flaps or their mounting screws can break off and be sucked into the engine, causing serious damage.
- Reduced Performance: Malfunctioning flaps can lead to poor fuel economy, rough idling, or reduced engine power.
🔧 Swirl Flap Removal or Deactivation
Because of the potential risks, some car owners choose to remove or blank off the swirl flaps. This can improve reliability but may slightly reduce low-RPM efficiency. Some ECU tuning modifications also disable the swirl flap function without physically removing them.
ECU was a Delco E98
OBD full protocol followed.

Due to the huge carbon build up and slightly rough idling it was decided not to increase the BHP at this time.
As you can see from the photo’s the carbon was just immense.

How the engine was breathing and operating we’ll never know.
Another reason Tuning Emporium chose not to increase the power was down to the missing flap/s from the manifold.
Unfortunately a lot of the parts we had to remove to get to the manifold had become so brittle with heat build up.

Safe to say this took a lot of cleaning!!
The customer travelled 3 hours to come and see us at Tuning Emporium, good news travels far away 🙂
