Peugeot Partner 1.6 Blue hdi, Ad blue fixed at Tuning Emporium

Another example of some recent work Tuning Emporium had in, was yet another 1.6 hdi Peugeot Partner van, one of the last 1.6’s, also used in the Citroen Berlingo, and many other PSA models.

We were able to rectify the ad blue fault and get the van back on the road, earning its keep.

The system consists of several fragile, expensive components that often fail simultaneously or sequentially:

  1. AdBlue Tank Pump Failure (Most Common): The built-in pump inside the AdBlue tank fails to generate enough pressure (it should be between 5 to 6 bars). When the pump loses its prime or mechanical parts seize up, the engine’s ECU assumes the system can no longer clean emissions and triggers the non-start countdown.
  2. Dosing Injector Crystallisation: AdBlue is a urea-based solution that easily crystallises when exposed to the air or cooler exhaust temperatures. Over time, white crusty deposits block the tip of the dosing injector (located under the car near the exhaust), preventing the liquid from spraying properly.
  3. Deforming AdBlue Tank / Vacuum Issue: Early 1.6 BlueHDi models had a poorly designed filler cap that didn’t vent properly. As AdBlue was used, a vacuum created inside the plastic tank caused it to warp or crush itself, destroying the internal pump and level sensors.
  4. NOx Sensor Failure: The exhaust sensors that measure the level of nitrogen oxides are highly sensitive. They frequently wear out or give false readings to the ECU, mimicking an AdBlue system failure.
